On Saturday the families of Farsley gathered together in the scorching heat for the launch of Farsley Farfield’s Community Cafe’ and Farm Shop. Over 600 people walked through the gates to enjoy activities such as: arts, crafts, storytelling and face painting, a clown was also on site to provide entertainment and give the youngsters a free circus workshop. Ice cold Caribbean punch was served to cool down the community. The main attraction of the day was the ‘make your own pizza’s', a staggering 150 pizzas were made in the constructed frog oven. Beanhead played DJ for the day and cracked out some summer tunes. The day was a huge success and we would like to thank everybody that came and got involved, if you missed out don’t worry over the next 2 weeks there will be more events for you to get involved in and we hope to see you there.

Come on down to farsley community cafe at Farsley farfield primary school for a free pizza party with all sorts of different activitys including a live radio show presented by our one and only beanhead so please come down most things are free!

There will be some beautiful smoothies and Caribbean punch. Plus you can get involved and make your own pizza with your favourite ingredients, before we cook it for you in our outdoor clay oven.

In the past week FYDP have worked on its very own pizza oven, we used a unique way to do this, we used 3 bus tyres (big ones), a range of fire bricks so they can withstand the heat for cooking the pizzas in, and also we have used something called Cob, which is a mixture of sand and clay to give it stability. The design of the oven is rather good, it was finished over the weekend, the head of it is in the shape of a frog with the mouth being the entrance for the pizza to go in and be cooked.

We made the use of glass bottles to provide for the frogs eyes, pretty big eyes they are as well. Its all for the community and adds a bit more to the farm shop and café.

Probably one of the best pizza ovens I have ever seen it is sure to go down a treat with the locals and the kids will just love it because of the designs. So come get yourselves down and get a pizza in this massive oven and tuck in.

When I first came to FYDP I expected it to be a challenge but also expected it to be fun with the atmosphere around the place, I’m glad I got sent on work placement here it is the most friendly atmosphere I’ve ever seen, you can’t beat it. The people who work there took me in very well and we all get on like a house on fire, which is brilliant, I will miss it when I finish working here.

One of the first things I was able to do was to shoot a video about working on the wall outside, so I was involved straight away, which was fun, Howard helped me with some of the basics when it came to the editing as id been a bit rusty on the Macs so he showed me the ropes and that was it, I was able to edit properly and not being big headed but I feel I did well.

I also did a video about the Farm Shop and Café and the usual goings on within it, its always a friendly atmosphere in the café, everybody that comes in are really friendly and I’d recommend it to anyone in the area to pop down one day.

The people I have worked with have been a pleasure to work with and I’m glad I came on work placement here, and id like to thank Howard for giving me the opportunity to work here

A second day of hard work on our cob pizza oven started off with mixing more clay, sand and straw to pack around the outside of the dome.

Then we added a thick layer of straw which will insulate the oven, and keep all the heat inside.

Finally we added another layer of cob on the outside, which will go hard as it dries. Then we had some fun decorating the oven. Here’s a quick video of the whole 2 days.

We’ve spent the day down at the cafe, building our new pizza oven. We’re making it out of clay, sand and straw using a traditional method.

We used 3 bus tyres packed full of soil and rubble to make a solid base. Then we mixed up the clay, sand and straw by treading on it with out feet, to make ‘cob’.

We made a mould out of sand, and then packed the cob around it to make the outside of the oven. We’re going to do another days work to add a couple more layers, and then leave it to dry for a couple of weeks, so that it’s ready in time to use at our big Pizza Party on the 2nd July.
