FYDP Update
Spin Radio at Farsley Youth Development Project has been awarded a grant which FYDP is using to give the Spin Radio base a complete make-over!
The current station is being extended to create a bigger studio space, the inside is being completely refurbished- new floors, new paint, new furniture and lots of great equipment to ensure the continuing success of Spin Radio.
This project means that in the future many more young people will be able to volunteer at the station, get some new skills, experience in radio and generally have fun whilst trying something new. In turn the wider community will benefit from those young people who are putting back into the community via radio. So far only some initial planning work has been carried out but soon enough the brand new Spin Radio will be up and running- just in time for the next two week broadcast of the year.
Watch this space for photos and more updates as the Spin Radio remodelling progresses.
Hi, I’m Gemma, 20, and I’m an English and Media second year student at Leeds Trinity University College. For the last few weeks I’ve been working at Farsley Youth Development Project, as part of my professional placement module; alongside Howard Bradley and another student from the same University.
Honestly I have completely enjoyed working on the tasks set me by Howard. The range of tasks seemed quite daunting when I first met Howard, but like everything after the first week and a half, things settled down, and ideas came together and quickly formed into plans of action- it took me by surprise just how much work you can do when you’re really into it.
So my tasks for the placement period consisted of helping Kyle get through and pass his ASDAN course, making jingles/ adverts and blogs about various other projects, setting up the initial plans for a new Farsley girls group as well branding and advertising, and doing some branding/ advertising for a potential community street festival plus speaking to the local businesses about the event.
The ASDAN work with Kyle I’ll admit was tricky but I enjoyed meeting Kyle and coming up with interesting ‘media’ ways that could be used as evidence of his work and understanding. It was easier when I could work with my placement partner as she studies a course which involves dealing with young people and education- very handy. The girls group and the community street festival is where my own course came into play and I could use my acquired media skills. I designed posters and advertising postcards for both projects as well as creating a contacts and feedback postcard for the festival.
On top of all that I’ve even been helping out with the painting of the building which is being transformed into a brand new community Cafe on the FYDP base. It was great fun to see it gradually change colour, looking livelier; as well as actually getting to chat to some of the kids who are going to benefit from the launch of the Cafe.
For the majority of projects I’ve mentioned I was able to use a Mac computer to make adverts/ jingles about each project. It really allows you to be creative and makes you think specifically about the message and information you want to get across in a short period of time. An added bonus to this particular task is that I’m going to be able to take the skills I’ve developed and use them when I have to make a jingle in my second semester radio assignment!
In all, as clichéd as it is, I feel I really have learnt and developed some valuable skills by working with FYDP and I totally enjoyed it. I’ve met some people with extraordinary circumstances, got to talk to loads of new people from a new area and improved both my radio and my English skills by blogging about it all =)
A special video has been created showcasing everything we get up to at FYDP. It’s the work of local film-maker Paul Brody. He interviewed young people and residents from Farsley to hear what they thought about the project and the impact it’s had on their lives and the local area.
The result is now available for everyone to see on the FYDP homepage – so visit www.fydp.org.uk and let us know what you think. The web site is also a great place to keep up to date with all our latest news and the information you need about the work and people of FYDP.
FYDP has been set up to support the young people of Farsley and help make the community a better place. But we haven’t got all the answers. So we want to make sure we keep finding ways of people telling us what’s needed.
One of the new ways we’ve come up with to help them do this is through the group that looks after all the overall direction of where FYDP is heading. We’re therefore very proud to announce that, following his election at the AGM, Ben Harrison will be taking a place on the FYDP Management Committee.
Better known to his friends as “Beanhead” (!), Ben is one of the young people we’ve worked with for the past few years on the Sub bus, and now he’ll be giving his time to help us make sure that we stay responsive to the needs of the young people we work with. Welcome aboard, Ben!
There was a proud moment for the FYDP team this month, as we travelled down to the Houses of Parliament in London to receive a very special prize – the Faithworks Award for working with Children and Young People. We were chosen for the award out of over a hundred and twenty nominations from across the country.
Given in recognition of everything we have achieved over the past few years, the award includes a grant of £5000 towards developing our work, which will be put towards developing our mentoring project.
Howard Bradley, the Project Co-Ordinator commented that “The exciting thing is that we’re a small organisation that works in partnership with lots of other projects – and this award shows that this is a really valuable way of doing things”.
FYDP have launched their Youtube Channel this week, as a sign of their intent to give young people the opportunity to make short films and to document the storyof the project.
