FYDP is gearing up for the annual Farsley Community Festival, which is just around the corner. One of the most recognisable features of the festival in recent years has been the many shed and tepees filled with fantastically fun things to do and see. This year is no exception – so look out for lots of lovely surprises, including a very special sweet shop, the chance to make model of yourself out of clay and the opportunity to learn loads of circus skills.
One particular act in a shed to look out for is a local young person, who will be giving an incredible Victorian magic act. You’ll need to see it to believe it!
Young people from Farsley have been busy creating their very own community radio station. With all programmes and the station branding created by the young people themselves, the launch of Spin Radio will be one of the highlights of Farsley Community Festival, taking place at Hainsworth Park on 17 July. The station will be broadcasting live from the Festival for the whole day.
You can get involved in the station on festival day by bringing along a song that you love on CD, mp3 or vinyl and we’ll play it on Farsley’s very own desert island – which includes the festival’s very own beach, complete with sand, palm trees and smoothie bar.
Programmes from Spin will be available to hear on this website.
It doesn’t seem long since fifty intrepid Farsley residents gathered at St John’s Church for the first Community Festival five years ago. Since then the annual event has grown beyond recognition, with over four thousand people gathering on Hainsworth Park last year for a sun-soaked day of fun and activities. And we are pleased to announce that the famed local event will be returning in 2010, with a whole bunch of fun for the whole family.
The people at FYDP think Farsley is something to be proud of. The festival is an opportunity for all members of the community to celebrate each other and the place they live – and all of it for free.
Many local people and businesses have been involved in organising the festival, including the churches, who last year gave away over 800 free banana splits, and the schools, who ran a gardening zone in which attendees made their own hanging baskets.
This year will be bigger and better than ever, and includes the launch of Farsley’s very own community radio station, run by young people from the area.
The Festival Kicks off from 1.00 – 5.00pm at Hainsworth Park in Farsley on Saturday 17 July. More details at www.fydp.org.uk
A group of young people who work with FYDP are spearheading an exciting new project – a specially created community radio station.
They have been given a grant from the organisation MediaBox to set up the station, which will aim to serve the people of Farsley by creating original programmes for podcasts and CDs. Once a year they will also look to gain a local radio licence to be able to transmit programmes on the FM frequency over a two week period.
The aim of the station will be to create a space for everyone in the area and talk about the issues that matter to them in the local community. Who knows – before too long you could hear your voice on the radio!

Local papers have been spreading the word about the Farsley Festival on July 17th.
There was an article in last weeks Pudsey times, as well as this article in Farsley Today…

The work of FYDP is only made possible by our amazing team of volunteers.
Over the past year an incredible 102 people have given their time to help us out – quite simply we couldn’t do it without them. Altogether they have donated 1000 hours of work, which equals 143 working days.
This is an amazing resource, without which we none of our projects would happen – including taking out our bus every Friday, running Farfield Fun youth club, or organising the annual Community Festival.
If you would like to find out more about giving some of your time to help out at FYDP, then we’d love to hear from you.

We’re fast approaching Festival time – and the local churches are getting involved by going bananas!
On 4 July they’ll be joining hundreds
of other residents in Hainsworth Park for a big celebration of each other and the place they live. And one of the ways they’ve decided to help out is by making banana splits for everyone to enjoy.
They just need to make sure they keep them away from a rather pesky group of mountain gorillas, who will be just one of the street theatre acts keeping the crowds entertained on the day…
We think Farsley is something to be proud of. That’s why we recently joined forces with Springbank Junior School to work with a group of Year 6 children on cleaning up some of the many ginnels that run through the area. The group of 10 and 11 year olds gave up an afternoon of their time to lend a hand in their community by tidying up the alleys and pathways of their own neighbourhood.
This was just one of a series of opportunities we’ve been working on to get people involved with making the village look its best, and as well as the school we’ve been helped out by the local churches and parents.
Howard Bradley, FYDP’s Project Co-ordinator said that “It’s always great to see young people getting involved in helping out their community. From talking to people in the area we know that keeping alleyways and ginnels clear of rubbish can be a difficult task. But this was a simple idea that let us work together to make Farsley a brighter and happier place.”
