On Saturday the families of Farsley gathered together in the scorching heat for the launch of Farsley Farfield’s Community Cafe’ and Farm Shop. Over 600 people walked through the gates to enjoy activities such as: arts, crafts, storytelling and face painting, a clown was also on site to provide entertainment and give the youngsters a free circus workshop. Ice cold Caribbean punch was served to cool down the community. The main attraction of the day was the ‘make your own pizza’s', a staggering 150 pizzas were made in the constructed frog oven. Beanhead played DJ for the day and cracked out some summer tunes. The day was a huge success and we would like to thank everybody that came and got involved, if you missed out don’t worry over the next 2 weeks there will be more events for you to get involved in and we hope to see you there.
Well my four weeks of working with the FYDP team as a professional placement has come to an end. However, I’ve enjoyed my experience so much and loved meeting all the lovely people of Farsley that I have decided that I want to continue my volunteering with FYDP, for the foreseeable future.
I will be seeing the Mojo’s Girls Group right through from the initial outlines until the very last session and I hope that it will be a huge success, and even become something we continue to run. I will also be carrying on giving as much guidance and support as needed for the young people who wish to gain an ASDAN qualification- a great experience for me and them as we all come away with something for the CV.
Even more exciting for me is the possibility of joining a group of FYDP volunteers and leaders on a fantastic trip to Old Eastern Germany- it’s going to be amazing so I can’t wait for that. I really hope it happens.
So I’ve still got plenty of time spent with FYDP to look forward too, so watch this space.

Hi Guys and Girls
So, Farfield fun, an hour and a half on a Thursday evening where FYDP and Farfield primary school work in partnership to give young people a chance to have fun make new friends and learn new things.
They are given a variety of opportunities and choices of activities to engage in. It is a place where they can enjoy life and gain support if necessary.
The young people range from ages 8 – 13 years old
Farfield fun was a fantastic, wonderful and very overwhelming experiece for me to engage in as a lot of my personal passions where covered. I learnt alot from this activity about myself, the career I want to go into and also how schools and communities can work together to strive to provide the young people with an opportunity to build them selves a better life and a better and brighter future.

Hi Guys and Gals,
Every year for the last five years FYDP have run a festival which usually takes place in the spring/summer time at Farsley Park, however this year we felt we may be able to have a funky change for 2011 and hold the festival in Town Street, the centre of the heart of the Farsley community.
We do need council permission to do this as we will be closing off a main road for a whole day. As FYDP volunteers we felt that the best way to approach this situation would be to personally go to the individual businesses and ask them personally for their opinions as to whether they would be happy for us to close the road to cars for one day so that we could hold the community street festival at the centre of this community.
Unfortunately there were many businesses that were unhappy and had many concerns about this. Closing the road would mean very limited access to a high percentage of their customers, for example: elderly, disabled and those with young children in push chairs.
Although this feedback was not what we hoped it does give us the ability to change our plans to work around the concerns of the public and the business managers/owners.
This task was a very long but worthwhile experience for me to be a part of. It taught me a lot and enabled me to think on my feet and brush up on my acting skills. It was also useful for improving problem solving skills and confidence skills. Going round the businesses and talking to the managers was a great way to improve self confidence and being able to go round with my placement partner meant that our approach was clear confident, smiling and thorough explanations were given to each business. This was a fantastic opportunity for me.
Problem solving came once we had gained the business responses and we had a long discussion and decided that maybe this year as we have a combination of different but large and costly activities happening such as the mojo’s girls group we would be acting in everyone’s best interests if we were to ensure that these activities take place this year and look into the community festival for next year.

Hi guys and gals,
Mojo’s was one of our first projects given to us by Howard Bradley (Project manager).
For 8 weeks on a Wednesday FYDP will be running an exclusive girls club for up to 10 girls between the ages of 15 and 17. It is currently titled mojo’s girls, however we are hoping that once the project begins the girls involved will come up with their own name for the club, to make it more exclusive and specific to them.
The sessions will be held on a Wednesday night 5pm – 7pm starting on Wednesday 16th march 2011 and will be held at mojo’s hair salon in Farsley. This location was chosen for its appeal to young girls alongside its positioning right in the centre of farsley and at the heart of where the young people live.
During this programme we will strive to provide a variety of sessions to build up their confidence, self-esteem, knowledge, social and personal safety awareness, keeping fit and being healthy. Each session will be unique with a variety of activities from making their own fruit cocktails’ and naming them, learning how to do different hair styles to a professional standard and have discussions with the police and fire safety officers.
We want to provide a service which is tailored to each individual therefore the session outlines are only guidelines. All young girls will have an opportunity to change what is included in each session.
We hope mojo’s will be a great success, supporting young girls and allowing them space to make new friends, build their confidence, have fun and learning a variety of life skills.

A community’s work is never done!
Work on the developing community cafe continued last Thursday as the Farfield Fun gang rolled their sleeves up and got stuck in- up to their elbows in some cases.
To add to the brilliant furniture bargains the FYDP team have found, the Farfield Fun team have started work on a giant mosaic tiled flower pot. An hour and half’s work was very impressive, the boys and girls are given a free rein to create whatever patterns they like using the tiles and putty provided.
Other areas of the cafe space have also had the Farfield Fun touch. Groups and individuals were armed with overalls, rollers and paintbrushes as they covered both the walls and themselves in fresh paint. There’s quite a mixed colour scheme going on- but you’ll have to wait until the launch for the details.
Tea and toasties were provided throughout the evening made by the volunteers themselves and everyone had a great time. Everyone is excited and the tension builds the closer we get to completing the renovation.
We’ve got some great photos on their way so keep checking this space.
FYDP will soon be launching a Community Cafe and Farm Shop on the FYDP base, in a building which Farfield Primary School kindly gave FYDP permission to make use of.
The FYDP team and volunteers throughout the Farsley community have been working hard to ensure that the Cafe is ready for its launch date in the Spring. Everything from shelf building, sanding and painting, right down to the on-site grown produce; which will be sold and used in store, is being carried out by the young people of FYDP.
So far the variety of colours being applied to the walls of the interior has already transformed the feel of the building- it’s bright, light and with a huge amount of space to be taken advantage of there will be room for everyone! Some areas of the decorating are even already close to completion. All the young people who have been helping out with the renovation have been hard at work each week, and the team spirit they show makes for a great community atmosphere. What is also fantastic is how the FYDP team are aiming to make sure that all the supplies, used in the project are resourced from the Farsley area.
Plans for the Cafe include a community kitchen hosting a family meal night once a week, a place for people to meet and be together, have some fun as well as providing a place for the Farsley community to call their own. The Cafe will also be using produce, grown on the farm at Farfield Primary School, in the food that will be served; as well as in an on-site shop. Every volunteer will be proud of the final result, when they attend the launch and order their first brew.
Watch this space for pictures and comments about the project.
To finish off the weekend of the Farsley Festival in style, we thought it would be great if we all shared a meal together. So on Sunday 18 July, we’re inviting everyone in the community to bring along a picnic and join us in having an old-fashioned street party. There’ll be a treasure hunt and a great big sing-a-long led on a full-size piano to help get us in the community spirit.
We also want you to enter our cupcake competition – so get baking. The theme is Faces of Farsley and there’ll be prizes for the most creative. Most importantly, we get to eat all the entries!
We’ll be getting together from 12noon – 2pm on Sunday 18 July on Hainsworth Park (the same place as the Community Festival the day before).
