A second day of hard work on our cob pizza oven started off with mixing more clay, sand and straw to pack around the outside of the dome.
Then we added a thick layer of straw which will insulate the oven, and keep all the heat inside.
Finally we added another layer of cob on the outside, which will go hard as it dries. Then we had some fun decorating the oven. Here’s a quick video of the whole 2 days.
We’ve spent the day down at the cafe, building our new pizza oven. We’re making it out of clay, sand and straw using a traditional method.
We used 3 bus tyres packed full of soil and rubble to make a solid base. Then we mixed up the clay, sand and straw by treading on it with out feet, to make ‘cob’.
We made a mould out of sand, and then packed the cob around it to make the outside of the oven. We’re going to do another days work to add a couple more layers, and then leave it to dry for a couple of weeks, so that it’s ready in time to use at our big Pizza Party on the 2nd July. Check out the Festival 2011 details for more information.

The Farsley Festival is bigger and better this year, with 4 different events going on, starting on the 26th June. As well as that, Spin Radio will be on the air for 2 whole weeks from the 4th July.

ASDAN is a qualification which FYDP help as many young people as possible to gain. They work through the ASDAN project with a young person who will carry out a series of activities including interviews, videos, power points and answering questions. These completed activities are then used as evidence to show that the young person fully understands different elements included in a work place.
A total of 13 credits have to be gained for the young person to pass the qualification, this is equivalent to 13 hours of work. The project covers aspects of work such as health and safety, equal opportunities, team working, problem solving and career exploration. It provides the young person with a qualification to enable them to gain a job in the future and can also be used as evidence that they understand these different aspects of work and a working environment.
Working on the ASDAN project with a young person has been a very different, but rewarding experience for me. To help a young person gain a recognised qualification which enables them to go into a different career and have a positive start to their working life is a wonderful experience as well as being able to guide and support someone through this part of their educational path.

Hi Guys and Girls
So, Farfield fun, an hour and a half on a Thursday evening where FYDP and Farfield primary school work in partnership to give young people a chance to have fun make new friends and learn new things.
They are given a variety of opportunities and choices of activities to engage in. It is a place where they can enjoy life and gain support if necessary.
The young people range from ages 8 – 13 years old
Farfield fun was a fantastic, wonderful and very overwhelming experiece for me to engage in as a lot of my personal passions where covered. I learnt alot from this activity about myself, the career I want to go into and also how schools and communities can work together to strive to provide the young people with an opportunity to build them selves a better life and a better and brighter future.

Hi guys and gals,
Mojo’s was one of our first projects given to us by Howard Bradley (Project manager).
For 8 weeks on a Wednesday FYDP will be running an exclusive girls club for up to 10 girls between the ages of 15 and 17. It is currently titled mojo’s girls, however we are hoping that once the project begins the girls involved will come up with their own name for the club, to make it more exclusive and specific to them.
The sessions will be held on a Wednesday night 5pm – 7pm starting on Wednesday 16th march 2011 and will be held at mojo’s hair salon in Farsley. This location was chosen for its appeal to young girls alongside its positioning right in the centre of farsley and at the heart of where the young people live.
During this programme we will strive to provide a variety of sessions to build up their confidence, self-esteem, knowledge, social and personal safety awareness, keeping fit and being healthy. Each session will be unique with a variety of activities from making their own fruit cocktails’ and naming them, learning how to do different hair styles to a professional standard and have discussions with the police and fire safety officers.
We want to provide a service which is tailored to each individual therefore the session outlines are only guidelines. All young girls will have an opportunity to change what is included in each session.
We hope mojo’s will be a great success, supporting young girls and allowing them space to make new friends, build their confidence, have fun and learning a variety of life skills.

A community’s work is never done!
Work on the developing community cafe continued last Thursday as the Farfield Fun gang rolled their sleeves up and got stuck in- up to their elbows in some cases.
To add to the brilliant furniture bargains the FYDP team have found, the Farfield Fun team have started work on a giant mosaic tiled flower pot. An hour and half’s work was very impressive, the boys and girls are given a free rein to create whatever patterns they like using the tiles and putty provided.
Other areas of the cafe space have also had the Farfield Fun touch. Groups and individuals were armed with overalls, rollers and paintbrushes as they covered both the walls and themselves in fresh paint. There’s quite a mixed colour scheme going on- but you’ll have to wait until the launch for the details.
Tea and toasties were provided throughout the evening made by the volunteers themselves and everyone had a great time. Everyone is excited and the tension builds the closer we get to completing the renovation.
We’ve got some great photos on their way so keep checking this space.
FYDP Update
Spin Radio at Farsley Youth Development Project has been awarded a grant which FYDP is using to give the Spin Radio base a complete make-over!
The current station is being extended to create a bigger studio space, the inside is being completely refurbished- new floors, new paint, new furniture and lots of great equipment to ensure the continuing success of Spin Radio.
This project means that in the future many more young people will be able to volunteer at the station, get some new skills, experience in radio and generally have fun whilst trying something new. In turn the wider community will benefit from those young people who are putting back into the community via radio. So far only some initial planning work has been carried out but soon enough the brand new Spin Radio will be up and running- just in time for the next two week broadcast of the year.
Watch this space for photos and more updates as the Spin Radio remodelling progresses.
FYDP will soon be launching a Community Cafe and Farm Shop on the FYDP base, in a building which Farfield Primary School kindly gave FYDP permission to make use of.
The FYDP team and volunteers throughout the Farsley community have been working hard to ensure that the Cafe is ready for its launch date in the Spring. Everything from shelf building, sanding and painting, right down to the on-site grown produce; which will be sold and used in store, is being carried out by the young people of FYDP.
So far the variety of colours being applied to the walls of the interior has already transformed the feel of the building- it’s bright, light and with a huge amount of space to be taken advantage of there will be room for everyone! Some areas of the decorating are even already close to completion. All the young people who have been helping out with the renovation have been hard at work each week, and the team spirit they show makes for a great community atmosphere. What is also fantastic is how the FYDP team are aiming to make sure that all the supplies, used in the project are resourced from the Farsley area.
Plans for the Cafe include a community kitchen hosting a family meal night once a week, a place for people to meet and be together, have some fun as well as providing a place for the Farsley community to call their own. The Cafe will also be using produce, grown on the farm at Farfield Primary School, in the food that will be served; as well as in an on-site shop. Every volunteer will be proud of the final result, when they attend the launch and order their first brew.
Watch this space for pictures and comments about the project.
